Patterned Imprinted Concrete

Patterned Imprinted Concrete (PIC) is an innovative skilled technique. This method uses colours and patterns to decorate concrete driveways, patios, and paths. This allows you to recreate the appearance of genuine materials like stone, slate, timber. This avoids the high prices associated with natural products.

Minimal Maintenance

Patterned concrete is a unique product that needs minimal maintenance. It performs far better than alternative products such as block pavers, flagstones, tarmac or flagstones. Many problems are eliminated with a four-inch fibre reinforced concrete and a dolomite base. These problems include sinking, pest control and weed growth. The problems that can be encountered with wooden decked patios include block paving and wood rot.

What is Pattern Imprinted Concrete?

Simply put, pattern concrete (also known by stamped concrete) involves pouring concrete over a subbase, then applying a colour followed by a hardener. This is very different from traditional concreting where blocks were used to create your finish.

The pattern is applied after the concrete has drained. You can choose from many different prints, such as brickwork or textured stone. The most popular choice for domestic properties is pattern concrete. This is especially useful when lining driveways.

Good quality print

The quality and durability of the concrete printed is crucial. Laying fresh concrete takes extreme care and dedication. Otherwise, the concrete will become inconsistent and cause a poor floor.

In most cases, contractors would use six to eight rigid printing matsa along with one flexible mat in each set. It is necessary to use six mats to span the narrowest section. However, flexible mats are used to access and to print areas that rigid mats won’t.

The majority of printing mats come in 600 x 600mm. But, there is some flexibility with matt size. All you have to do is decide how big you want them and then find the best prices.

Colour Consistency

You should consider colour consistency when installing imprinted concrete. This will ensure that your flooring has the desired colour. Patterned concrete consists of two main components: colour surface hardener, and antique release agents.

Poor final appearance can be caused by poor application of colour surface hardener. This is especially noticeable for large commercial jobs, like retail shop flooring.

It may take several concrete deliveries for big commercial jobs. This could result in slight colour variations in each concrete mix. The job of the surface hardener, when applied, is to match the colours. This is ideal when larger jobs take longer than a few working days.

Ensuring Long-Term Durability

To ensure the durability of concrete floors above, the material used to sub-stone the base must be merged with the subgrade.

A concrete mix is also important in ensuring structural integrity will remain strong for many years.

This is especially true in high-traffic areas like driveways, multi-storey parking lots, and warehouses where machinery is used daily.

Reduce the Chance of the Concrete Cracking

Concrete patterned for driveways must contain at least 300kgs per cubic metre.

For colder weather, you’ll need more, approximately 350-380kg.

An air entertaining additive can also be added to enhance the floor’s durability and resistance from cracking caused by heavy traffic and weather.

Reducing Maintenance & Maximising Results

You can enhance the overall appearance of patterned cement by applying an acrylic sealant that is solvent-based (only once dry). Water-based acrylics will cause more problems, so be careful with these for patterned concrete.

You can also apply the sealant once every four years to maintain the appearance and quality of your patterned concrete.

Although it is not mandatory, it will ensure that your driveway or any other area of patterned concrete remains beautiful for many years.
